The October 10-11, 2020 remnants of Hurricane Delta event in Georgia brought heavy rainfall, localized flash flooding, scattered damaging winds, and an outbreak of weak tornadoes as the post-tropical cyclone moved northeastward across the Southeast after landfall in Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane on October 9-10. The system passed northwest of Georgia on Saturday, October 10 (main activity afternoon/evening), with lingering effects into early Sunday, October 11.
Hurricane Delta made landfall early on the morning of October 9, 2020 along the Louisiana coast, bringing widespread damage to that portion of the coast. After landfall, Delta moved northeastward before picking up speed and moving just north of Georgia as it quickly weakened.
As the remnants of Delta passed northeast of Georgia on Saturday, October 10th, moisture off the Gulf of Mexico spread across the area due to Delta, bringing multiple weak tornadoes to the area in addition to pockets of heavy rainfall and flooding across the Atlanta metro area and portions of northeast Georgia. Periods of heavy rain and localized flooding led to many flooded or washed out roads and strong winds within tornadoes downed trees and power lines and damaged several buildings.
Key Highlights
Rainfall and Flooding (Primary Threat):
Widespread 2-5+ inches across north and central Georgia, with pockets of heavier amounts causing flash flooding.
Numerous flooded roads, washed-out low-water crossings, and ponding in metro Atlanta and surrounding areas.
Localized flash flooding reports, including potential contribution to a train derailment in one area (early Sunday evacuations due to flooding near tracks).
No widespread catastrophic flooding in Georgia (unlike heavier impacts in Louisiana or farther north).
Tornado Activity:
Several weak tornadoes confirmed by NWS Atlanta (Peachtree City/FFC) on October 10, with surveys ongoing into the 11th; reports indicate at least 2 confirmed (some sources note more weak/brief ones across north/central Georgia).
Notable: EF-1 tornado in Covington (Newton County, east of Atlanta) damaged a homeless shelter, injured 2 people, and displaced ~30 others (structural/tree damage).
Other weak tornadoes/EF-0 level events caused tree/power line damage, minor structural impacts.
Tornado watch issued covering metro Atlanta and western Georgia (nearly 3 million people under watch); multiple tornado warnings during the afternoon/evening.
Wind and Other Impacts:
Scattered damaging winds from embedded thunderstorms (downed trees, power lines).
Power outages in affected areas, though not as widespread as later Zeta event.
Tree falls and minor structural damage reported.
No direct fatalities in Georgia from Delta remnants (minor injuries from tornado/wind events).
Context:
Part of the extremely active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season; Delta was one of several systems (Sally, Delta, Zeta) impacting Georgia that fall with remnant moisture/instability.
Setup featured Gulf moisture, shear, and instability allowing embedded supercells/tornadoes despite weakening circulation.
This preceded the more wind-focused Zeta remnants later in October.
Impacts were mostly localized and recovery was relatively quick compared to stronger tropical systems. In north Georgia areas, flash flooding and tree/wind issues were among the main concerns—classic for remnant tropical moisture setups!
